South Mountain Junior High School was built to accommodate the growing population on the southside of Allentown. It was the first middle school designated a Community School in partnership with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, providing/coordinating services that reach out to at-risk students, providing enriching academics for all students, a positive school environment and extended day program and services that specifically target literacy, parental engagement and safety.

The United States Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander, made an appearance at South MountainMiddle School in October 1991 to support the Lehigh Valley 2000 Business Education Partnership. Its large auditorium was named in honor of principal Bruce Hutchison, who passed away in 2005.
